There are two golf courses in Brooklyn and and one golf driving range, all threeh are certainly worth a visit to this New York’s most populous and historic of the five boroughs. From its dozens of diverse neighborhoods, parks, museums, its world famous bridge and the just as famous beaches, rides and hot dogs of Coney Island, Brooklyn has it all.
A great deal of what Brooklyn has to offer can be found in and around Dyker Beach Golf Course, Marine Park Golf Course. and Brooklyn Golf Center. All are located near the water and just off the Belt Parkway, they serve as bookends along the Brooklyn’s southern border. Dyker Beach Golf Course lies just off the Narrows (there are some spectacular views of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge) where the British launched their 1776 invasion against George Washington’s Army, setting off the Battle of Brooklyn.
Washington may not have won that battle but he knew enough to order the construction of Fort Hamilton to prevent any future invasion from the Narrows. Who would’ve guessed nearly 200 years later then US Army Lt. Colonel Earl Woods would take up golf playing at Dyker Beach while stationed at Fort Hamilton.
Aside from the golf to be found on the Robert Trent Jones designed Marine Park Golf Course, there is also nearby history to be found. Located off Jamaica Bay, Marine Park Golf Course lies at the far end of Flatbush Ave. just north of the Rockaway’s in Queens and not far from New York’s first municipal airport Floyd Bennett Field. Approximatley
Now part of Gateway National Recreation Area Floyd Bennett Field was the starting point or destination for many of the worlds most famous and infamous aviators. In 1938, Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan took off for Los Angeles and landed in Ireland. Nearly 40 years later in 1957 Navy test pilot John Glenn landed at the same airport having set a peed record for crossing the continent. And while Marine Park doesn’t have a practice range you’ll find one of the finest practice centers in the city - Brooklyn Golf Center offers extensive practice facilities and is approximately 1 mile from Marine Park across from airport on the west side of Flatbush Ave.
