No matter how you wish to enjoy your day you can pretty much find a way to do it in Manhattan – unless you want to chase golf balls around a golf course.
Then again you won’t find the likes of Times Square, Central Park, Lincoln Center, dozens of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, hundreds of museums, galleries, landmarks and a selection of restaurants and shops than can be found in New York, New York anywhere else in the world. That doesn’t mean there’s no recognition of Golf in Manhattan.
Golfing greats Bobby Jones (1921 and 1930) and Ben Hogan (1953) were honored with ticker-tape parades down the Canyon of Heroes, after their British Open triumphs.
And while you won’t be able to stroll down a fairway but you can work on your swing, grab a lesson, practice your putting or even play a simulated full swing round at anyone of more than 50 of the greatest golf courses in the world at Chelsea Piers. And, you can rent clubs if you don’t have your own.
Located right on the Hudson River (the entrance is at 23d St.) Chelsea Piers at http://www.chelseapiers.com/gc01.htm also features a full service pro shop, restaurants, and dozens of other golf and non-golf diversions from ice skating to bowling.
While not part of Manhattan, you can also work on your game at the Randalls Island Practice Center. Located on the East River beneath the Triborough Bridge, the practice center at http://www.golfandsportsinfo.com/randallsisland/index.html, features 80 heated and well-lit, two-tiered practice stalls.
There is a pro shop, lessons and club rentals are available.
And remember, you’re in New York you can just hop on the subway and Van Cortlandt Golf Course or Mosholu Golf Course are less than a half-hour away.
