Golf In Staten Island

From Silver Lake Course at the northern end Staten Island not far from ferry to the South Shore Golf Course at the southernmost tip of New York State you can draw a clean straight on a map running through the three courses.

In the center of that line is Latourette Golf Club considered by many the “gold standard” of golf courses in New York City. Staten Island is known for its rolling hills and valleys  - left behind by the melting of a glacier more than 20,000 years ago those marks are evident everywhere LaTourette. The course itself makes up part of the Staten Island Greenbelt 2,800 acres of trails, woodlands, wetlands and meadows.

Just down the road from LaTourette Golf Club is St. Andrews Episcopalian Church where St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton’s grandfather served as rector. Surrounding the Church is Richmondtown one the first of the island settlements much of which is still preserved.

The South Shore Golf course is not far from Sandy Ground, the oldest community of freed slaves in the United States and an important stop along the Underground Railroad. Despite the vast development on Staten Island part of the Sandy Ground community remains today.

Silver Lake Golf Course is located alongside a park and reservoir connecting Staten Island’s busiest thoroughfares Victory Blvd and Forest Ave. It is surrounded by communities founded by Irish, Polish, German and other ethnic groups who flocked to Staten Island seeking work along the waterfront.

Not far from the course is the Staten Island as well as “the strip” along Forest Ave. a mile-long trail of sports bars and pubs offering some of  finest burgers anywhere.
